A disagreement has erupted among leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regarding the timing of the party’s much-anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
One side, led by Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, is reportedly trying to delay the gathering, while another faction insists the meeting must be held no later than August to address critical issues, including leadership decisions.
Sources within the party told reporters that while some stakeholders have been pushing for an immediate NEC meeting to settle urgent internal matters, others are strategizing to maintain the current leadership status quo, especially with Damagum at the helm.
A prominent party chieftain, who chose not to be named, revealed: “The meeting must hold before August ends. It is a constitutional obligation. Anything beyond that could trigger a legal crisis.”
Another insider claimed some PDP governors prefer Damagum to continue, which may explain the hesitation in finalizing a date. “Those benefiting from the present structure don’t want a change. But the majority want a new chairman who can reposition the party for 2027,” the source stated.
Meanwhile, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, when contacted, said: “The NEC meeting will be held at the appropriate time. Consultations are ongoing.”
He added: “There’s a process. And the party is following that process. When it is concluded, the date will be made public.”
However, another official insisted that the delay tactics could backfire. “The opposition is watching. The PDP must not give the impression of disarray ahead of 2027,” the source cautioned.
The controversy reflects a broader struggle for control within the PDP as it attempts to reorganize after its 2023 general election performance.
