The Peoples Democratic Party has reaffirmed that its national elective convention will hold November 15-16 in Ibadan, despite threats from allies of Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.
At the inauguration of the 119-member Convention Planning Committee on Tuesday, PDP governors, led by Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed, stood firm.
“The convention is on course. We are not cowards. We will not tolerate indiscipline,” Mohammed declared.
However, Wike’s loyalists under the Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP issued tough conditions on Monday.
They warn after a three-our meeting, that the Ibadan convention would be “invalid” if their demands were ignored.
Former Benue Governor Samuel Ortom, reading their communiqué, opposed micro-zoning and insisted the North-Central retain the national chairmanship.
The group further demanded fresh congresses in Ebonyi, Anambra, and the South-East, while endorsing the South-South congress in Cross River.
In response, PDP Chairman Umar Damagum insisted the convention remained “sacrosanct,” urging members to prioritise unity over personal ambition.
“The PDP is not broken. The PDP marches forward, stronger and determined to reclaim power in 2027,” Damagum said.
Additionally, PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, appealed for calm, saying convention decisions must reflect the majority’s will.
The feud, however, highlights deepening cracks in the opposition party, already weakened by divisions since the 2023 elections.
Meanwhile, Oyo PDP spokesman Michael Ogunsina described the Ibadan convention as a “done deal,” vowing no force could stop it.
Bauchi PDP dismissed Wike’s camp as “ranting of an ant,” declaring unwavering support for the NEC’s decisions.
Despite tensions, Adamawa Governor and committee chairman, Ahmadu Fintiri, promised a credible convention to reposition PDP ahead of 2027.
