OpenAI has launched a new generation of integrated apps in ChatGPT, enabling users to chat naturally with third-party services. The company revealed the update in a blog post on Monday, describing it as a major leap toward building a global developer ecosystem.

Developers can now build apps using the new Apps SDK, currently in preview.

“We’re introducing a new generation of apps you can chat with, right inside ChatGPT. Developers can start building them today,” the company said.

These apps blend seamlessly with chat interactions. ChatGPT can suggest them automatically or users can invoke them by name. Each app includes interactive features like playlists, slides, forms, or maps.

For example, a user might say, “Spotify, create a playlist for my party this Friday,” and ChatGPT will instantly connect to Spotify to generate the playlist. Similarly, if a user discusses buying a home, ChatGPT may recommend Zillow to browse listings within the chat.

According to OpenAI, the Apps SDK allows developers to reach over 800 million users. App submissions and monetization options will roll out later this year.

Currently, logged-in users outside the EU can access these apps on all ChatGPT plans; Free, Go, Plus, and Pro.

Early partners include Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow, with more to follow.

OpenAI calls this milestone the start of a new interactive AI era that merges chat with practical app tools. “The magic of this new generation of apps in ChatGPT is how they merge familiar interactive tools; like maps, playlists, and slides, with the natural flow of conversation,” the company said.

Users can now watch Coursera videos and get real-time explanations from ChatGPT or start a Canva project outline and turn it into a presentation instantly.

The range of available app, and what users can do within ChatGPT, will grow rapidly as more developers join. OpenAI believes users will soon create, learn, shop, plan, and explore seamlessly within one conversational environment.
