Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has confirmed the recruitment of over 5,000 contract teachers into the state’s Ministry of Education as permanent staff.
The teachers, who previously earned ₦65,000 monthly as contract workers under former Governor Godwin Obaseki, received appointment letters during a ceremony at the Government House in Benin.
Governor Okpebholo personally supervised the distribution of the letters. He said the move reflects his administration’s strong commitment to education and the welfare of teachers.
“I wanted to see this moment myself,” Okpebholo said. “Many of you waited too long for confirmation. As you receive your letters today, you’ll also get transport fare, knowing some of you traveled far.”
He praised teachers for their sacrifices and described them as key drivers of Edo’s progress. “Your reward is no longer in Heaven; it is here, under our watch,” he added.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, thanked the teachers for their patience during the years they served on contract. He acknowledged their resilience and dedication despite limited resources.
“You have stayed committed to educating our children,” Iyamu said. “Beautiful schools are nothing without teachers. Today, a compassionate leader has rewarded your perseverance.”
The commissioner further highlighted major improvements in the state’s education sector under Okpebholo’s leadership. He revealed that the government had built over 68 new schools within one year.
He added that funding for Ambrose Alli University rose from ₦41 million to ₦500 million, enabling the construction of a 1,500-capacity lecture theatre and a 600-bed hostel.
Iyamu also announced the launch of the EDU-Rescue Programme, which provides access to quality education for children from poor backgrounds.
The ceremony marked a major milestone in Edo’s education reform. It reinforced Governor Okpebholo’s pledge to prioritise teachers’ welfare and improve learning conditions statewide.
Top government officials attended the event, including the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor; the Head of Service, Anthony Okugbonwa; and several special advisers.
