Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has informed the Federal High Court of his readiness to begin his defence.

Previously, Kanu filed a preliminary objection challenging the court’s jurisdiction. But on October 21, he submitted a new motion confirming his readiness to start proceedings on October 24, 2025, as directed by the court.

A medical assessment confirmed Kanu is fit to face trial.

In the motion he personally signed, Kanu told Justice James Omotosho he plans to present 23 witnesses, classified as “ordinary but material” and “vital and compellable.” Authorities will summon the latter category under Section 232 of the Evidence Act, 2011.

He also confirmed that he would testify in his own defence, offering a sworn statement to refute the charges and explain the political motives behind his actions.

Nnamdi Kanu asked the court for 90 days to complete his defence due to the volume of evidence and witnesses.

Among his “compellable” witnesses are Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd.), Tukur Buratai, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Hope Uzodinma, Nyesom Wike, Dave Umahi, and Okezie Ikpeazu. Others include Abubakar Malami, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, Yusuf Magaji Bichi, and unnamed individuals.

Kanu promised to submit sworn statements from voluntary witnesses and update the prosecution on all developments.

Meanwhile, an Abuja Magistrate Court has ordered the detention of Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, and 12 others who protested his continued detention.

They face charges of criminal conspiracy, defying lawful orders, inciting unrest, and disturbing public peace under Sections 152, 114, and 113 of the Penal Code.

The 13 defendants, including Kanu’s brother Emmanuel Kanu, appeared under two separate FIRs. After a short recess, the court ordered their remand at Kuje Correctional Centre until their arraignment on October 24, 2025.
