Nigeria has formally been granted the right to host the 2027 Second African Schools Games. Following a vigorous bidding procedure in which Nigeria defeated other formidable competitors, including South Africa and Kenya, the news was made in Algiers on Tuesday.

In response, Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), said he was thrilled and proud of Nigeria’s accomplishment:

The director said, “This is a huge win for Nigeria and for the future of sports development on the continent. Our successful bid is a testament to the unhinged commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to sports excellence.”

“It is also a reflection of the Renewed Hope Mandate, Nigeria is fast returning to glory as the epicenter for sports excellence in Africa, while simultaneously growing our sports economy and enhancing our international image as a prime destination for global sporting events. In 2027, Nigeria will deliver an unforgettable experience for young athletes from across the continent.”

Nigeria’s recent history of hosting prestigious events, including the National Sports Festival and the 3rd CAA Africa U18/U20 Athletics Championships, which were widely praised for their superb organization, athlete experience, and facilities, played a significant role in the country’s successful bid.

In addition, Hon. Olopade expressed gratitude to the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) for their faith in Nigeria and promised that measures would be taken right away to guarantee the highest standards.

Habu Gumel, the president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), and Hon. Bukola Olopade, the director general of the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC), were part of the group that spearheaded Nigeria’s campaign.
