Nigerian commercial banks have said that international transactions on their naira cards would once again be possible. In separate notifications to consumers, United Bank of Africa (UBA), Wema Bank, and GTBank announced that the service had resumed on their naira cards following years of suspension.
About three years have passed since numerous banks stopped allowing foreign transactions using Naira debit cards.
“In line with our continued commitment to providing you with seamless and enhanced banking experiences, we are pleased to inform you that all UBA Premium Naira Cards, including Gold, Platinum, and World variants are now enabled for international transactions,” UBA informed its clients.
According to UBA’s latest customer announcement, the restart is consistent with its ongoing dedication to giving consumers smooth and improved banking experiences.
“This means that you can now use your Premium Naira Card more easily and conveniently for everyday payments, online shopping, point-of-sale, and ATM transactions worldwide,” UBA continued.
In a statement, Wema Bank also revealed the change, stating that “customers can now ‘pay in dollars’ with their naira cards.”
“Your Wema Naira Mastercard just went global! Now you can pay in dollars on all your favourite international platforms; Amazon, eBay, AliExpress? Netflix, Spotify, YouTube,” the bank stated.
A number of other banks temporarily halted international transactions on ATMs and POS channels between July 2022 and January 2023. The change was brought about by the ongoing FX shortage, which endangered the viability of important economic sectors.
