Kylian Mbappe scored again as Real Madrid beat nine-man Getafe 1-0 on Sunday to reclaim the top spot in La Liga. His strike marked his eleventh consecutive game with a goal.
Before next weekend’s Clasico, Xabi Alonso’s side regained their two-point advantage after Barcelona briefly went ahead with a win over Girona.
Getafe resisted until Allan Nyom was sent off just a minute after coming on. Mbappe then struck in the 80th minute, netting his tenth league goal of the season. Late in the match, Alex Sancris received a second yellow card for another foul on Vinicius Junior.
Vinicius, who was rested ahead of games against Juventus and Barcelona, changed the game’s tempo after coming on. “Vini had a great impact,” Alonso said. “We did what we had to do, even though it wasn’t the most beautiful game.”
Returning from an ankle injury, Mbappe led the attack and proved decisive once again. “We’re really pleased with Kylian’s progress; he’s making decisions,” Alonso added.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made a vital save against Abu Kamara in stoppage time to secure Madrid’s win.
Getafe coach Jose Bordalas argued that Nyom’s red card should have been “a yellow.”
In other La Liga matches, Real Sociedad drew 1-1 with Celta Vigo, Rayo Vallecano defeated Levante 3-0, and Elche played out a 0-0 draw with Athletic Bilbao.
