Bayer Leverkusen sack Erik ten Hag after just two Bundesliga games in charge. The former Manchester United manager joined the German side in May but failed to make an impact.
Erik Ten Hag, 55, was dismissed in October 2024 by Manchester United before accepting a two-year deal with Leverkusen. His side lost 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim and drew 3-3 with 10-man Werder Bremen despite leading twice. The poor start left Leverkusen with only one point.
Leverkusen’s managing director Simon Rolfes admitted the decision was tough but necessary. “Nobody wanted to take this step. However, the past few weeks have shown that building a successful team with this set-up is not feasible,” he said.
Club CEO Fernando Carro echoed the sentiment, calling the parting painful but essential. “We remain committed to achieving our goals for the season. To do that, we need the best possible conditions across the first team,” he explained.
Ten Hag’s appointment followed Xabi Alonso’s departure to Real Madrid after guiding Leverkusen to a league and cup double in 2023-24.
