Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called for urgent electoral reforms in Nigeria, stressing changes to INEC appointments and political defections.

Speaking at the Electoral Reform Dialogue in Abuja, Jonathan, represented by Ann Iyonu, said Nigeria has progressed since 1999 but still faces serious flaws. He proposed that an independent panel, including judiciary, civil society, academia, and unions, should screen and nominate INEC chairmen.

He argued that such reforms would strengthen neutrality, build trust, and improve INEC’s credibility. “Nigeria must be bold enough to reform the process to better reflect the will of the people,” Jonathan said.

Jonathan also condemned frequent defections by elected officials. He recommended creating an independent Registrar of Political Parties to enforce discipline and declare defectors’ seats vacant. He cited Kenya and Malawi as examples of countries with similar systems.

The former President further advised that all election disputes be resolved before officials are sworn in, while fewer courts should handle cases for quicker rulings. Jonathan stressed that reforms must be seen as patriotic, not partisan.

Meanwhile, PDP spokesman Debo Ologunagba reaffirmed Jonathan’s membership in the party. He praised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as a strong performer and highlighted the PDP’s pool of capable candidates for 2027.
