Twitter co-founder and Block CEO, Jack Dorsey, has launched a new messaging app called Bitchat, which operates without internet access, central servers, or even traditional identifiers like phone numbers and email addresses. Announced on Sunday, July 6, 2025, Bitchat is now available in beta via TestFlight and is being hailed as a potential game-changer in secure, decentralized communication.
Built on Bluetooth mesh networking, Bitchat allows nearby devices to exchange encrypted messages without needing a mobile signal or Wi-Fi. As users move through different physical locations, their devices form dynamic clusters to transmit messages across extended distances by hopping from one phone to another.
This approach ensures that messages are ephemeral, private, and censorship-resistant. Messages disappear by default and are only stored locally on devices, never touching any centralized infrastructure.
Dorsey explained on X (formerly Twitter) that Bitchat is a personal experiment in peer-to-peer technologies, incorporating Bluetooth mesh, encryption, and a store-and-forward model that allows messages to eventually reach offline users. The messaging app even enables bridge devices to connect overlapping clusters, making long-distance communication feasible without internet connectivity.
Experts say Bitchat represents a strong push toward off-grid communication tools in an era of increasing censorship and surveillance. The app includes optional group chats protected by passwords, and future versions are expected to support Wi-Fi Direct to increase message speed and range.
In a significant move, Bitchat also integrates Bitcoin’s Lightning Network, enabling fast and secure micro-transactions within chat threads. This addition fuses social interaction with digital payments and could appeal to crypto users seeking platforms that value privacy, decentralization, and utility.
Bitchat follows Dorsey’s support for other decentralized platforms like Bluesky and Damus, reinforcing his broader campaign to reimagine digital communication and finance as fully user-owned, censorship-resistant, and transparent systems.
The platform is fully open-source, inviting developers worldwide to contribute to its evolution. With its strong focus on privacy, peer-to-peer functionality, and cryptocurrency integration, Bitchat is positioning itself as a radical alternative to conventional messaging services like WhatsApp and Telegram.
