The Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) campaign will be launched nationwide by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in anticipation of the general elections in 2027.

The exercise will start on August 18, 2025, according to Prof. Sam Egwu, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, or REC, for Benue State, who made the announcement in Makurdi yesterday.

According to Prof. Egwu, the CVR exercise will be conducted in accordance with constitutional provisions to provide accommodations for individuals who had reached the age of 18 years following the last election.

He emphasized that it would start with online pre-registration, which would be completed via the INEC website, and that it would be held in the 36 states of the federation as well as the Federal Capital Territory, or FCT.

“In-person registration in all INEC Area Offices nationwide and other designated centers, starting from August 25, 2025, between 9am to 3pm each day, from Monday to Friday,” he said, would take place after the online registration.

Regarding “inclusion of fresh persons who are not in the existing register as a result of turning 18 and above after the 2023 general election and were not able to register before because they were not in the country, in prison, or were not interested,” the REC emphasized that the exercise would address these concerns.

Those who needed “correction on the card or deliberate change or inclusion of any other parameters, or seeking intra and inter-state transfer, or from one ward to another or one polling unit to another,” he noted, or whose cards were lost or damaged, would also be addressed by the exercise.

He advised Nigerians to “take advantage of the services early enough to avoid last-minute rush for attention so as to avoid the usual pains and hardships associated with the exercise in the past,” warning that registrants must not pay money or give gratification to anyone in order to be registered.

The commission will announce the end date of this round of the exercise to allow for data collection and breaks, Prof. Egwu said, adding that measures were in place to adequately meet the needs of internally displaced persons, or IDPs, in the state.
