Manchester United suffered a shock defeat in the League Cup, losing to League Two side Grimsby on Wednesday night.
Grimsby went 2-0 up through Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren after errors from goalkeeper Andre Onana. United responded late as Bryan Mbeumo scored his first goal before Harry Maguire equalised in the 89th minute.
Benjamin Sesko missed a clear chance to seal victory in stoppage time. The match then moved to a penalty shootout.
The shootout featured 24 spot-kicks. Matheus Cunha failed to convert at 4-4, while both sides scored 15 consecutive penalties. Mbeumo later struck the bar, sealing a shock defeat and sending Grimsby into round three.
The loss increases pressure on manager Ruben Amorim, who remains winless in the league after last season’s 15th-place finish. Despite debuting Sesko and welcoming back Bruno Fernandes, United crashed out in humiliating fashion.
Grimsby, facing United for the first time since 1948, celebrated the historic upset with 9,000 traveling fans.
Elsewhere, Brighton hammered Oxford 6-0 with Stefanos Tzimas scoring twice, while Fulham and Everton earned 2-0 victories.
