The Federal Government has approved a new welfare program granting lifetime pay to top security officers upon retirement.

Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the policy during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat in Abuja. According to a Federal Fire Service statement signed by DCF PO Abraham, the benefits apply immediately.

The program covers officers retiring as Commandant-General, Comptroller, or Deputy Controller. Dr. Tunji-Ojo said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to officer welfare and institutional performance.

The Minister noted that over 50,000 officers have been promoted in the past two years, clearing years of backlog. “Any officer retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General will now receive lifetime salary benefits,” he said.

Beyond financial welfare, Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized professional growth and training. He revealed that new manuals have been developed to enhance capacity building. The Ministry has also begun constructing a world-class Fire Academy to match international institutions such as the Arizona Fire Academy.

The Minister added that future promotions would depend on merit and performance rather than seniority alone. He also highlighted the importance of workplace wellness, promising that mental health support would be prioritized in the Ministry’s welfare structure.

The policy marks a major step in boosting morale and strengthening Nigeria’s security institutions.
