Renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has praised Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, describing him as genuine, consistent, and not desperate for power.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Amazing Africans on Monday, Adichie said Obi remains humble despite post-election criticism and setbacks.
“He doesn’t need to be president. He wants to be because he cares about Nigeria, but he doesn’t need to be. That is a very important distinction,” she said.
Adichie emphasized that Obi’s desire to serve stems from a deep commitment to the nation, in contrast to politicians driven by ego or personal ambition.
Reflecting on her long-standing relationship with him, she added:
“He is one of the simplest men I have ever known. The person I knew 15 years ago is still the same in terms of values; humble and accountable.”
The celebrated writer highlighted that Obi does not expect praise for fulfilling his leadership duties.
“Peter Obi is not a person who expects you to thank him for doing his job. To him, public service is not a favour, it’s a responsibility,” Adichie noted.
She concluded that her support for Obi is rooted in a shared vision for a better Nigeria, noting that his values continue to resonate with many Nigerians seeking integrity in leadership.
