Former Big Brother Naija housemate Adekunle Olapade has expressed concern about how many ex-contestants struggle after leaving the show. Despite being Africa’s biggest reality TV program, Adekunle said Big Brother Naija lacks a clear success path for its participants.
He noted that many former housemates face financial hardship, adding that Nigeria’s weak reality TV culture fuels this troubling pattern.
On his X handle, Adekunle wrote, “Let me double down and say that BBN is the biggest reality TV show in Africa, but somehow, Nigeria does not have a Reality TV culture; there’s almost no certain success path after the show and most of the reality stars suffer for this.”
His post sparked mixed reactions. One fan suggested that reality stars should simply return to their old jobs after the show.
Adekunle responded by clarifying that many contestants joined the show to change their fortunes, not because they had stable careers.
“A lot of the cast didn’t have 9-5s to begin with, which is why they tried to change their story by going on the show. Only a few had jobs or businesses before they went on the show. But yes, going back if things didn’t work out doesn’t sound like a bad idea,” he wrote.
