The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has dismissed claims that the Federal Government uses anti-corruption agencies against opponents.

His clarification followed allegations from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who accused Tinubu’s administration of weaponising the EFCC to weaken opposition.

Atiku, Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007, alleged that agencies were harassing opposition leaders, threatening the nation’s democracy.

Speaking Wednesday at the ICPC Roundtable Engagement in Abuja, Idris stressed that Tinubu’s government strengthens institutions rather than interferes in them.

“Fighting corruption is one of the administration’s 8-Point priorities. That is why the President strengthens ICPC and EFCC,” Idris said.

He added that Tinubu’s policy of non-interference ensures anti-corruption agencies operate independently, professionally, and under the rule of law.

The minister reaffirmed Tinubu’s commitment to eliminating corruption in public service, stressing that Nigeria offers “no safe haven for corruption.”

Moreover, Idris revealed that the Federal Government is pursuing judicial reforms to fast-track trials and end unnecessary delays in corruption cases.

“These reforms ensure justice is delivered fairly and without endless deferrals,” he noted.

He also highlighted the roundtable’s theme, “Partnership for Strengthening Transparency and Accountability,” as evidence of federal collaboration with states.

According to Idris, engaging state commissioners will spread anti-corruption messages nationwide and strengthen grassroots transparency.

“Transparency and accountability are core pillars of democracy and the foundation of President Tinubu’s administration,” Idris stressed.

He urged state governments to support Tinubu’s development agenda, regardless of party affiliation, for national unity and progress.

“I implore Honourable Commissioners to embrace the Renewed Hope Agenda, which promotes inclusion, diversification, and economic growth,” he added.

Finally, Idris commended ICPC Chairman Dr. Musa Aliyu for adopting grassroots-focused communication strategies that involve state and local stakeholders.
