Alfred Aondoaver Emberga is the new Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly. He represents the Makurdi North Constituency.

His emergence followed the resignation of former Speaker Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh. The House Clerk read Dajoh’s resignation letter during an emergency session on Monday.

Douglas Ackya, who represents Makurdi South, nominated Emberga. Abu Umoru, the member for Apa Constituency, seconded the motion.

Just days ago, the Assembly suspended Emberga and three others for allegedly plotting to remove Dajoh. The suspended members included Emberga, Shimawua Emmanuel (Vandeikya 2), Cyril Ikong (Oju 2), and Abu Umoru (Apa).

During the emergency session, 21 lawmakers, led by Deputy Speaker Lami Danladi, lifted the suspension. This brought the number of lawmakers present to 25 out of 32.

Alfred Emberga was sworn in as Speaker at 6:30 p.m. amid heavy security at the Assembly complex. In his acceptance speech, he pledged to protect the Assembly’s integrity and provide effective representation.

He also promised cooperation with the executive branch. Emberga stated, “We must provide sound laws, strong oversight, and quality representation.”

He thanked his predecessor, Aondona Dajoh, for his service and courage. Emberga added that the Benue State House of Assembly would build on Dajoh’s foundation as it moves forward.
