Despite rumors that Governor Ademola Adeleke might defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the PDP caucus in Osun declares that it will back his decision. The possibility that Mr. Adeleke would switch to the APC before the state’s governorship election on August 8, 2026, had been floated.
The governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said in a statement on Saturday that the PDP caucus supported him at a meeting held in Osogbo on Thursday. Additionally, according to Mr. Rasheed, the caucus voted in favor of Mr. Adeleke and encouraged him to keep in touch with all local and national stakeholders.
According to him, the caucus also praised the governor’s performance and leadership style while in office. In a statement released following its meeting at Government House, the PDP caucus decided to follow Mr. Adeleke wherever he goes, Mr. Rasheed continued.
Nonetheless, he acknowledged that the governor was still seeking advice on the best course of action. Members of the state executive council, party executives, the Elders Caucus, the Special Advisers’ Forum, the national and state assemblies, and the state chapter of ALGON leadership were present at the meeting, he said.
Rumors of a potential PDP defection were stoked by Mr. Adeleke’s absence from Friday’s South-West Caucus meeting in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. After meeting with President Bola Tinubu at his private home in Ikoyi, Lagos, last month, Mr. Adeleke’s absence from the meeting along with PDP members in Osun sparked rumors that he might defect.
